Broken Promises in Corporate America

Corporate America is one of the most brutal environments that an individual can experience. For most individuals working in this environment may be the norm. For others it may be a make or break deal. The managerial styles that are presented by first line, mid level and executive managements all the same. Why? Well for the most part, all managers have to lie to their employees to keep up the moral. Although you as the employee may want to believe your manager, nonetheless, watch their behavior and their actions will speak otherwise. This is a tactic that managers are taught to use in order to ensure that employees always work more than their worth.

There is nothing wrong with this form of management. You as an employee can sit through an annual review and your manager can rave about how well you are. However, a few days later, things can be said to mean otherwise. Why? Well many factors depend upon why managers break promises or lie. If they cannot meet their own objectives, it may trickle down to how you are rated. If your manager cannot be promoted due to budget cuts, then you may be held back. Therefore, any work that you do and may have been praised for will go down the drain. But don't let this discourage you. This is normal behavior. Managers are under high levels of stress and sometimes they are forced to make decisions that affect their staff. Managers can also be trained to use emotional intelligence.

The six core areas for employees, managers and leaders to understand are the vital concepts of emotional intelligence:
  • Emotional Self Awareness (within the Self Awareness Quadrant)
  • Accurate Self Assessment  (Self Awareness)
  • Self Confidence (Self Awareness)
  • Emotional Self Control  (Self Management)
  • Empathy (Social Awareness)
  • Influencing Others (Relationship Management)

The best advise that I can give you as an employee is to always work hard. Working hard with integrity and owning up to your own mistakes will only help you build credibility, secure your seat in a company, and leave you open to promotions in other departments. Also, always have a positive attitude. Even if your manager breaks a promise, remember, it may not be there fault as they too are limited in their decision making.Learn to manage your manager.
